Dr. Dan Thomson
Dr. Dan Thomson is a third-generation veterinarian who was raised in Clearfield, Iowa, and is recognized internationally as a leader in beef cattle production and health management. He lectures around the globe on topics surrounding the contemporary issues in veterinary medicine and animal agriculture. He completed his master’s in ruminant nutrition from South Dakota State University, earned a doctoral in ruminant nutrition from Texas Tech University, and received his bachelor’s in animal science and doctoral in veterinary medicine from Iowa State University. As host of “DocTalk,” Dr. Thompson brings his passion for veterinary medicine, his knowledge of the beef cattle industry and his down-to-earth sense of humor to a national audience on RFD-TV.
Glen Klippenstein was the board president for Protect the Harvest for the past five years and serves as a board member. Protect the Harvest was created by Frank Lucas, Lucas Oil, to defend and preserve American freedoms and to support farmers, ranchers, outdoor enthusiasts, and animal owners. Klippenstein has had a long and respected career in the beef industry, operating farms in Pennsylvania and Missouri. He was a Missouri State Representative and has served in leadership roles in the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, American Polled Hereford Association and National Cattlemen’s Association.
Frank Goedeken, Ph.D.
Frank Goedeken, Ph.D., has worked as a consulting nutritionist in the High Plains since 1989, including 15 years with Purina Mills and as owner of Integrated Beef Consultants, LLC. Priorities of his practice have been gain, conversion, cost of gain and out weight. In 30 years out weights have increased over 200 pounds yet the cattle are younger. This can only be accomplished with superior genetics, improved nutrition and improved production practices. The challenge continues to bring these advances together without compromising cattle health. Properly growing and developing the cattle are required to reverse the trend of increased death loss and medicine cost.
Shawn Tiffany co-owns Tiffany Cattle Company in Herington, Kansas, with his brother Shane. Shawn manages the business’s farmland which includes an innovative no-till and cover crop strategy on which customer cattle are grazed and feedstuffs for the feedlot are raised. TCC typically has cattle in grazing systems 10 months of the year and produces all of the business’s silage needs. Soil health is a big part of the operation’s focus and cover crops and grazing play an integral role in that philosophy.
Mike Beam was appointed secretary of the Kansas Department of Agriculture by Governor Laura Kelly in January 2019. Beam came to KDA following 38 years of experience in association management for the Kansas Livestock Association. He has served as the executive director of the Ranchland Trust of Kansas, an affiliate of KLA, for 15 years. He has dedicated his career to assisting farmers and ranchers to advance their policy and public relations needs and in building highly visible, responsive and respected organizations.
Tiffany Dowell Lashmet is an assistant professor and Extension specialist in agricultural law with Texas A&M Agrilife Extension. She authors the award-winning Texas Agriculture Law blog and hosts the award-winning “Ag Law in the Field” podcast. Lashmet grew up on a family farm and ranch in eastern New Mexico, received her bachelor’s in agribusiness at Oklahoma State University, and her law degree at the University of New Mexico. She is licensed to practice law in New Mexico and Texas.
Lorna Marshall has held various roles in the AI industry over the last 20 years. Currently, she serves as the vice president of beef programs for Select Sires. She attended Colby Community College where she competed on the livestock judging team. Marshall then transferred to Kansas State to complete her bachelor’s and eventually completed her master’s at Colorado State University. She is also a partner in Marshall Cattle Company, with her husband, Troy.
Robin Cox is currently the forage and feed specialist for ServiTech Labs. She serves clients across the Great Plains understanding unique needs and bringing best practice, research and responsive service to ranchers, feedlots and feed manufacturers. With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science from Texas A&M University and Washington State University, respectively, Cox focuses on animal benefits from positive forage and range management. Her key phrase is “knowledge is power.” Robin applies this to forage testing for verification that animal nutritional requirements are being met for peak production.
Brandon Depenbusch, Ph.D.
Brandon Depenbusch, Ph.D., is currently vice president of cattle operations for Innovative Livestock Services, Great Bend, Kansas. Depenbusch provides guidance to the company’s feed yards in Kansas and Nebraska, trucking and fuel distribution companies and an alfalfa pellet mill. He also directs an intensive research program in the areas of production efficiency, health management, biosecurity, and traceability. Depenbusch earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from Kansas State University.
Steven Myers, Ph.D.
Steven Myers, Ph.D., is a technical sales specialist for Purina Animal Nutrition serving Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado. After earning his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Myers moved west to work in beef cattle nutrition on the High Plains. His study of ruminant nutrition has served him in his work with Colorado State University, Purina Mills and Land O’ Lakes Purina Feed.
Derrell Peel is the Charles Breedlove Professor of Agribusiness in the Department of Agricultural Economics. He has served as the Extension livestock marketing specialist since he came to Oklahoma State University in 1989. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Montana State University and his doctorate from the University of Illinois. His main program areas at Oklahoma State University include livestock market outlook and marketing/risk management education for livestock producers.
Ted Boersma started in the dairy industry in 1984 with 100 cows. Now he jokes that he is privileged to take care of that many employees. He is husband to Nancy and together they have nine children, seven son-in-laws, one daughter-in-law, and soon to be 21 grandchildren. He takes great pride in family, both at home and the families provided from at the farm and by the farm.
Terry Houser, Ph.D.
Terry Houser, Ph.D., is an associate professor at Kansas State University and specializes in meat processing, selection and grading. He earned his bachelor’s in animal science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and competed on the meats judging and meat animal evaluation teams respectively. Houser earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in meat science from Iowa State University. His appointment with K-State allows to spend half of his time researching new avenues in meat science and the other half of his time teaching future meat scientists.
Marc Campbell, DVM
Dr. Marc Campbell, DVM, is a technical service veterinarian for Bayer Animal Health who supports field representatives and the products that they sell. He has been working for Bayer since 2016. Campbell is very interested in internal parasite control and has spoken to cattle producers and veterinarians throughout the country about this topic. He was born and raised in Alva, Oklahoma where he graduated from both high school and the local four-year college, Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1997. He went on to Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine earning his DVM in 2001.
Dr. Brad White
Dr. Brad White received his doctor of veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia and worked for six years in a mixed animal practice in southeast Missouri. His emphasis in practice was beef cow-calf and stocker medicine and management. He then worked for two years in beef production medicine at Mississippi State concurrent with completion of his master’s degree. He is currently on faculty at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and serves as director of the Beef Cattle Institute.
Dr. A.J. Tarpoff
Dr. A.J. Tarpoff received his bachelor’s in animal science at Kansas State University in 2010. In 2012, he received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree and his master’s in biomedical science at K-State. As an associate feedlot veterinarian with Alberta Beef Health Solutions in Southern Alberta, Canada, his focus was herd based cattle production medicine, hands on feedlot employee training, disease surveillance and mitigation and federal import/export duties. Now back at K-State, Tarpoff works closely with the state’s extension team to develop an extension program to help improve the health of cow-calf, stocker and feedlot cattle for beef producers throughout the state.
Third-generation seedstock producer Lee Leachman has spent his lifetime breeding and marketing cattle. At the young age of 7, he started helping with heat detection on his family’s 2,300-head operation in Billings, Montana, and through the years he has mastered the marketing and selection of seedstock. Lee is currently serving as president of the Beef Improvement Federation. He is the managing partner of Leachman Cattle of Colorado with headquarters in Fort Collins, Colorado.
